Call for Project Proposals for Access to Leonardo

The Computing Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) is opening the second Call for applications for access to Leonardo HPC capacities. The Call is open to applicants from the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

The Leonardo supercomputer is currently ranked as the ninth most powerful supercomputer in the world, according to the Top500 ranking. It is operated by the CINECA center in Bologna, Italy. As a member of the consortium, Slovakia contributes its HPC expertise and provides technical and engineering support to user communities through the Computing Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. This allows the Computing Centre to offer Slovak users the opportunity to participate in a national call and gain access to the Leonardo system.

Total Allocation Available for Slovak Projects:

  • 47,271 Node hours on Leonardo Booster
  • 21,009 Node hours on Leonardo DCGP

Given the size of the allocation, the Call will support a smaller number of projects, focusing primarily on those requiring the simultaneous use of a large number of compute resources.

Access is open to all fields of science and research, applicants must be affiliated with the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Supported projects should enable progress and innovation in the chosen field, providing added value to addressing societal and/or technological challenges in Slovakia.

Applications used in the projects should:

  • Be tested and demonstrate high efficiency and scalability on HPC systems.
  • Require extensive simulations demanding significant CPU/GPU time.
  • Be highly parallelized applications capable of efficiently utilizing available resources.
  • Involve resource allocations that would be challenging to fulfill on the current national HPC infrastructure (HPC system Devana).

The need for computational power and resource utilization must be clearly and thoroughly described in the project proposal. The specifications of individual Leonardo modules can be found HERE.

Key Dates:

  • Call Deadline: February 24, 2025
  • Start Date for Allocations: March 1, 2025 (for selected projects)

Projects will be evaluated by the expert staff of the Computing Centre of SAV based on their scientific merit and efficient use of computational resources. Projects can have a maximum duration of 12 months and must be submitted via the user portal: https://register.nscc.sk. After registration, please complete the form in the “Projects / Leonardo Project” section.
